"My Dear Sir,
I am afraid there has been a bad contretemps about the autograph Extract you were kind enough to ask me to write for the Album to be presented to Lord [Douglas] Haig. I find ... that you wrote both in March and in April - while I was in America (I only just returned late this month). Now during my absence I left instructions with my housekeeper to forward all LETTERS only. Your last communiations with the enclosed ____ (?) struck her as not coming under that name. They were just on the side and I missed them altogether. It is really most disappointing and annoying. I fear I can no longer be of service, but you will appreciate, I hope, that the delay was not due to anyy negligence or forgetfulness on my part. I regret it more than I can say ...
