Presented as a New Year's gift by Madame Jusserand to Senator Henry Cabot Lodge with a note on her engraved card wishing “a happy one for you & a less unhappy one for those who are going through the fiery trial.” She notes that the book was quite difficult to find. Her husband, Jean Jules Jusserand was the French Minister in Washington from 1902 to 1925.
