First Edition, #956 of 960 copies. Typography by Frederic Warde. Illustrated. 1 vols. 4to. Levon West (1900-1968), noted American etcher, specialized in sporting and Western scenes. He was born in Centerville, South Dakota, where his father was minister of the Congregational Church, and attended the University of Minnesota where, though majoring in business, he studied art in a random fashion. Headed for the Graduate Business School at Harvard in 1925, he stopped in New York and visited the Art Student's League where he met Joseph Pennell, who "turned him away from Harvard, away from business, into the precarious conditions of an etcher's career." He studied with Pennell, and at the time of this catalogue's publication, when he was only 30, he had created over a hundred plates of uncommon merit. A beautifully designed and produced catalogue, with typography by Frederic Warde, printed on handmade deckle-edge paper, the etchings fully described and superbly reproduced.
