Among which are:” listing titles through“Peregrin Pickle” with prices. 1 vols. 8vo. Contemporary half red morocco, gilt rules on spine. Quite rubbed, spotting and typical browning of text, some stains, last name of contemporary owner torn from title-page affecting upper portion of first word of title, similar portion torn from lower free endpaper, a gathering sprung, some light soiling, else a very good copy. First American from the fifth London Edition. Pp.viii, 299, [1 blank], [4 pages advertisements captioned “Warner 7 Hanna have for sale an extensive assortment of Novels, Romances &c. Among which are:” listing titles through“Peregrin Pickle” with prices. 1 vols. 8vo. This was first published in 1793 in German as “Aballino des Grosse Bandit.,” dramatized in 1795 and translated into English by Matthew Gregory “Monk” Lewis in 1805. According to Lewis' introduction he made some changes in the text, adjusting or deleting some passages to suit the English taste, introducing a character Monaldeschi and supplying the whole of the final chapter other than a few words.
