Frances Trollope was an English novelist and writer who is said to have influenced such authors as Harriet Beecher Stowe. Her first book is her best known, but her social novels were influential in their time, and took strong anti-slavery or anti-Catholic stances. Her novels are not often read today, in part -- paradoxically -- because she was so prolific and observational a writer.

This novel was her tenth novel, published in the same year as several other serials, in a period of great productivity for Frances. Sadleir 3232
