n.p., 19th century. 1 vols. Image 7-3/4 x 5-3/4 inches, matted and framed to 14-1/2 x 12-1/2 inches overall. Fine condition. 1 vols. Image 7-3/4 x 5-3/4 inches, matted and framed to 14-1/2 x 12-1/2 inches overall. A beautiful, meticulously painted gouache of a prosperous 17th century couple: the man sits on a couch, holding a diamond scribe with which he has etched a legend on the window reading “Sans Femme qui est heureux?” [“Without a wife, who is happy?”], which his wife stoops to read, smiling with approval. A gem-like rendering, of high professional quality.
