Author was a pastor of the First Church in Beverly, Massachusetts. In 1828, he traveled to Cuba to recuperate from poor health. He arrived in Matanzas, where he stayed for two weeks. After a short visit to Havana, Abbot explored and stayed in the interior. During his trip to Cuba, Abbot rode on horseback and covered 800 miles.
