Cautions To Young Persons Concerning Health… Showing The Evil Tendency Of The Use Tobacco…

  • Cambridge: University Press, 1822
By Waterhouse, Benjamin MD
8vo, pamphlet, removed dbd, 40 pp. Last page almost detached, some chips and wear at extremities, paper a bit brittle, some foxing and browning; otherwise very good. Originally published in 1804, this anti-smoking pamphlet draws attention to the medical problems associated with tobacco use at that time. Stomach problems and headaches were believed to be side effects of smoking or chewing tobacco. This article includes a letter from Governor Sullivan, who blames the early death of a friend on the use of snuff (p. viii). Text even points out that President Adams admitted he was addicted to tobacco. However, Waterhouse (1754-1846) does suggest that tobacco was an agreeable medicine in old age (p.xii). Interestingly, even way back then, the best cigars were believed to come from Havana (p.35). Waterhouse also claims that tobacco use creates an unnatural thirst for spirituous liquors. But perhaps more importantly, he recognized tobacco as a powerful narcotic. Moreover, he also felt tobacco use made one lazy and indolent, as well as hurting your sense of smell and taste.
