Cumming sailed to Hawaii in 1879, visiting Oahu, the big island, and Maui. She saw most of the sights, particularly the volcanic ones, and shares a long second hand account of the 1880-1881 eruptions of Mauna Loa. The book is illustrated with two maps (one in color and one folding), and eight autotype plates from drawings or paintings by the author.
