The Wonders of the Yosemite Valley, and of California

  • Boston: Alexander Moore Lee & Shepard, 1872
By Kneeland, Samuel
4to, original embossed purple-brown cloth with gilt decoration, illustrated with two wood engraved maps and 10 original photographic plates mounted on stiff paper by John P. Soule, [iii]-xii, 13-[98 ]pp. Spine sunned ends a bit chipped, light rubbing, scattered marginal foxing. Overall very good or better. Considered one of the most attractive early books on Yosemite, this worked contained in its second edition the first appearance of any of John Muir’s writings in a book, although they were anonymous. In this revised edition. Kneeland uses a lot of material from Muir’s scientific reports, and while there is some notion that not enough credit was given to Muir in this book, his name was at least mentioned. Additionally, since John Soul never visited California, some believe that the photographs were taken by John Houseworth or Eadweard Muybridge.
