By Wiseman, Cardinal; M. Alfred Nettement (introduction)
Paris: Garnier Freres. Hardcover. Very Good Minus. Hardcover. Includes 8 full page engravings and many vignettes. Originally written in 1854, this French novel has been adapted into film three times. It is set in the 4th century AD Rome, during a time of Christian persecution. The main character is Fabiola, a beautiful, wealthy, young Roman girl who attacks her slave girl one day in a fit of rage. The slave turns out to be a Christian, and ultimately, humbled by the slave girls humility, Fabiola converts. The story also involves other plot and character threads revolving around true stories of Christian martyrs and saints.

Bound in full red leather with gilt title, decoration, and raised bands to spine. The front board is present but detached. The edges of the boards are worn. Silk moire endpages. There is light browning and light foxing along the top margins of many pages but overall the interior is very clean. A good candidate for rebinding. 486 pages. REL/071211.
