Preface--This volume lays no claim to be considered as a contribution to the literature of art. It contains reproductions in autotype of sixteen of some of the best pictures which appeared on the walls of the Royal Academy in the second quarter of the present century, and which have always been favorites with the public. Though well enough known, many of the engravings from these pictures are now seldom to be obtained, and it is only by the agency of one of the most beautiful of the new processes of reproduction that the sixteen prints can now be offered at the original published price of one of them. The descriptions, which are given to add some little biographical and anecdotal interest to the engravings, are taken from Viardot's "History of Painters," and other well-known sources, which are duly acknowledged in the text.
