Nice set of Buckingham's respected historical surveys of the two leading North American nations. Howes notes that this work is "devoted New England, New York, Pennsylvania and Maryland." According to Larned, Buckingham provides "a record of three years travel through the United States between 1837-1840... The writer is candid and endeavors to be impartial. His style is dignified though touched by self-complacency. Of special value are his comments on education, benevolent institutions, and the treatment of Indians." Larned 1848. Howes B921.
