Thick 8vo, original cloth, gilt lettering, illustrated with a dozen color plates, plus colored frontispiece and other text illustrations, 564, [1] pp. Binding with a little wear, and some fraying at the extremities, top joint cracked, frontispiece partially separated, rear hinge a bit weak, signature on front endpaper, normal aging; otherwise very good. Published in many editions, Howe provides broad coverage of the Western experience from the early French missionaries to the Chicago Fire, which is illustrated with a color plate. There is discussion of Indians Wars and warfare, and a description of the Great Prairie. He also spends some time reviewing the various territories, including Arizona, Dakota, Idaho and Montana.
