  • Washington]: , 1840.
By Colt, Samuel.
Pamphlet, 8vo, removed, 14 pp. Removed, but paper tape expertly used in the left margin, normal aging and a little browning. A very nice copy overall. This pamphlet is a Senate document that provides correspondence between Samuel Colt (1810-1862) and various military and political people concerning his new guns. This is an important document relating to gun history. Colt is essentially trying to sell his 'repeating' rifles and pistols to the US military. Success of his new revolver in the Texas fight for independence, and the Seminole War got him considerable recognition, and a receptive military. The discussion in this pamphlet seems to show a fair amount of positive feedback on the weapons. Over the next few years Colt would refine his designs, and have considerable success selling his guns. His Colt 1851 Navy Revolver would set the standard for side arms, and would stay in circulation until 1873. ANB.
