In the preface of this work the author suggests that the object of this work was not just to provide an authentic history of sea and rail disasters, but to also perpetuate the memory of the innocent victims who were lost in these events. Howland reports on the explosions on the Aetna, Charlton, Dubuque, George Collier, and the loss of the General Jackson in the 1830s. He also comments on some of the earliest railroad accidents in Boston, Connecticut, New York and New Jersey. Howes H742.
