New York: Harry N. Abrams, Inc., Publishers, 1974. Hardcover. Quarto [27.5 cm] 1/2 brown paper with black cloth covered boards, a white stamped title on the spine, and a black ink stamped vignette on the front cover. Good. The spine ends and edges of the covers are gently bumped and rubbed. The covers are just a little cocked. The black cloth on the rear board is damp-stained. There is a small scuff mark on the bottom edge of the text block. There is a former owner's notation on the front free endsheet. The rear hinge is a little weak. The dust jacket is in very good condition. The edges are gently bumped. There is a 1 and 1/4 inch closed inch tear in the top edge of the front panel. There are also two 1/2 inch long closed tears in the top edge. There are numerous shorter closed tears in the edges as well. Very subtly yellowed. The rear panel is mildly rippled and has general light soiling. With 743 illustrations. With text by the artist. Ward produced six wordless novels between 1929 and 1937, and although Ward continued to be an in demand illustrator for the rest of his life, these early works find him at the absolute height of his creative and artistic powers.
