Goethals who was assigned to the task by President Roosevelt in 1907 to oversee this project, which was finished in 1914.The Panama Canal was an incredible achievement, and in recognition of this effort, Goethals, born in Brooklyn, had a bridge named after him that connected Staten Island and New Jersey. pancanal website.
