- Boston:: Benjamin Edes and Sons,, 1783.
Pamphlet, 8vo, later 1/2 morocco, gilt lettering on spine, 29 pp. Lacks half title, fore-edges uncut, some tears and chips to outer margin edges, but not affecting text, some soiling and aging, some rubbing to extremities, bookplate on front pastedown, inked library stamp on verso of title page; still a very decent copy in a very good modern binding. This copy contains the Harvard Library gift bookplate from the estate of Ernst Louis Gay. Samuel Mather (1705-1785) was the son of Cotton Mather, and a prominent clergyman in his own right. His most famous work was "the Life of Cotton Mather", published in 1729, but is also known for his Apology for the Liberties of the Churches of New England (1738). This pamphlet was published late in his life, about two years before his death. It appears that this title has come up at auction only once in the past 25 years. Evans 18032. Sabin 46794. ABPC.
