By Gowen, Franklin B.
Pamphlet, 8vo, original gray wrappers, front cover lettered in black, 36 pp. Vertical crease throughout, old ink numbers on front cover, two stains on rear cover; otherwise very good, and a nice copy. Gowen (1836-1889) was a lawyer by training, but would also become president of the Philadelphia & Reading Railroad. However, his real claim to fame was the role he played as special prosecutor in cases against the Molly McGuires. The Molly Mcguires were a secret Irish-American organization in the eastern coal regions. They were accused of terrorism, kidnapping, and in this case murder. With some help from informants, Gowen and others convicted a number of Molly Mcguires, and many were executed. ANB.
