Contemporary mottled sheep, gilt ornaments and lettering pieces to spines, marbled endpapers. Some rubbing to extremities, corners bumped, hinges starting, chipping to head of Volume II, rear joint of that volume starting at foot. Light toning to text, somewhat darker in places, light foxing to a few leaves. Early owner signature to title page of Volume I "M. Rigault-Beauvais / 1819", interiors otherwise clean. $300. * Fourth edition. Sweet and Maxwell include this in its list of major bibliographies and notes: "the second volume is a descriptive bibliography of French, English, foreign and Roman law, well indexed. The bibliography lists 2,348 books and provides historical, critical and bibliographical notes on several remarkable books of French jurisprudence." Sweet & Maxwell, A Legal Bibliography of the British Commonwealth 1:1-2 (7). This copy is very likely from the library of Michel Rigault-Beauvais, who would later, between 1841 and 1861, serve as justice of the peace ("juge de paix") at Fresnay-sur-Sarthe in the northwest of France (Wikipedia).
