Original cloth, thick 8vo, gilt lettering, illustrated, 896 pp. Binding worn at extremities, spine partially separated from text block, but still attached at one end, hinges weak, especially top hinge, first folding plate torn at the folds, large facsimile folding document detached and torn, but still present, normal aging, library label on front pastedown, inscription on endpaper; all plates present.
Valentine Manuals are considered the best source material on New York City History. They are abundantly illustrated with color plates maps and documents. First published by David Valentine in 1841, he continued to be the editor until 1867, when Joseph Shannon took over the job. This volume contains some very good material and plates including a tinted view of Central Park, a map of old New York in 1778. Additionally, the large folding map of the city is present. there is also a folding plate illustrating a birds eye view of New York.
