Reminiscences of a Ranger.

  • Los Angeles:: Yarnell, Caystile & Mathes,, 1881.
By Bell, Horace.
8vo, original gilt pictorial green cloth, [6], [9]-457 pp. Front joint splitting, small bumps to edges (including corners) head of spine a bit frayed, light rubbing (affecting gilt stamped top cover), hinges cracking, slight lean, occasional foxing; otherwise about very good.
A rather scarce title that gives a pretty vivid picture of the clearly lawlessness and law enforcement in southern California. Bell provides ample descriptions of some of the villains and outlaws of that time. Graff reports "Bell has written more minutely upon the 'steam side' of society than any other California author, and there is a fascination about his book. From the long lists given of murderous villains, thieving scoundrels, and other unholy characters." Graff 240. Cowan P. 44. Howes B325.
