  • New York:: D. Taylor,, 1873.
By Potter, Clarkson N.
Pamphlet, 8vo, original printed wrappers, 28 pp. Some aging and browning, a little soiling to back wrapper, wrappers torn from spine about a 1/3 of the way down (if handled carefully they can be prevented from tearing further), a couple of very small chips at extremities, slight crease in the center; otherwise in very good shape. The Tammany Society was organized in 1786 in New York City. While initially a social organization, it became a powerful political force in the city by the 1850s. In the 1860s William "Boss" Tweed essentially held the political fortunes of the city and the Tammany Society in his grip. Corruption prevailed, and the Tammany Society ended up be in reorganized after the fall of Tweed. The Tammany Society would remain an important political force in New York City for many years, but the anti-Tammany movement led by Mayor Robert F. Wagner Jr. would put an end to that in the 1960s.
