By Karney, Jack
New York: William Morrow & Company. Good. 1946. First Edition. Hardcover. (no dust jacket) [moderate shelfwear, light soiling to covers, slight darkening of spine cloth; one-time owner's address label on front pastedown (and the same person's name and address rubber-stamped on bottom page edges), another one-time owner's signature at upper left corner of ffep]. Hard-boiled novel about life in the tenement district of New York's Lower East Side, "on the ragged edge of society where so much is bad, [yet] there is also good." The author's second novel; he continued to turn out gritty crime yarns with New York settings (including a number of paperback originals) for another decade or so. He appears to have stopped publishing around 1960, when he would have been only 49 years old; he also seems to have completely escaped the notice of bibliographers of crime fiction. Wha' happened, I wonder? .
