New York: R. Worthington, 1882. First edition thus. Hardcover. Good +. 321pp. Octavo [22 cm] Red cloth covered boards with a gilt stamped title on the spine. Top edge gilt. The spine and boards are mildly darkened and soiled, and have numerous small moisture stains. The spine is subtly faded and rolled. The text block is cracked multiple times. In a custom light purple chemise and slipcase. Overall the volume is in Good + condition and the chemise and slipcase is in Very Good condition. The slipcase has a dark purple bonded leather spine with raised bands, and a gilt stamped title on the spine. The slipcase shows some shelfwear on the edges and corners and the cloth on top 1/4 is heavily sun faded. Theophile Gautier was held in high regard by writers such as Balzac, Baudelaire, the Goncourt brothers, Flaubert, Proust and Oscar Wilde.
