Gouge (1796-1863) was born in Philadelphia, and would become an economist and author. In addition to being an editor with the Philadelphia Gazette for several years, he wrote several books on banking, including A Short History of Paper-Money and Banking, which was first published in 1833. In his early years, Gouge seemed to be opposed to paper money and centralized banks, but his views softened over time. This title provides a considerable amount of information on the banking system, including the amount of capital of major banks, speculation in bank stocks, the proper principles of banking, and the effects of a system of credit. tshaonline website.
