E. and G. Merriam, 1829. First American Edition. The first American edition of Scottish theogian Thomas Dick's Philosophy, first published in Glasgow in the same year. An important book, in which Dick developed a theology compatible with Bacon's empirical science, the Philosophy is said to have influenced both Joseph Smith and David Livingstone. This copy backed in cloth over publisher's boards. Lacking the front endpaper. The title page and the six leaves following, have a pale blue stain, presumably from something which was laid in at some time.
