By Goodis, David
New York/London: D. Appleton-Century Company. Good in Fair dj. (c.1947). First Edition. Hardcover. [just a bit of wear to book, but with soiling/spotting/browning to page edges, one-time owner's signature at top of ffep; alas, the jacket's a mess, heavily edgeworn, with a ragged diagonal tear across the front panel (pretty much held together by the jacket protector) and various other small deprecations]. Goodis's next-to-last hardcover novel, prior to his descent (and I mean that in the nicest possible way) in the netherwold of paperback originals, where he did much of his best work. As noted by Francis M. Nevins Jr., this novel displays "many of the character types, settings, and motifs [that] recur with ritualistic frequency in his later paperbacks." Not the prettiest copy you'll ever see, but then a truly nice copy would take a much bigger bite out of your wallet. .
