The iconic portrait photograph of Charles Baudelaire by Étienne Carjat, taken c. 1863, and here printed posthumously in La Galerie Contemporaine in 1878. Carjat was rivaled only by Nadar in his portraits of 19th century French cultural figures. “Like Nadar, Carjat captured character and expression brilliantly.
