The authors visited 97 commercial establishments among restaurants, bars, greasy spoons and household rooftop lunchrooms. Most of the places are small, with little structure and sanitation, some of difficult access, but all offer dishes and appetizers prepared by talented cooks and served in breathtaking views of the ocean. The book "sheds light on how the culture of the favela communities of Rio's south zone represent a concentrated substance of the cultural output which traditionally emanates from the ensemble of the city's suburban areas."
