Monteath's goal in his Forrester's Guide "was to lay down rules, and describe a method by which standing trees of all sizes may be accurately and expeditiously measured, and their value ascertained." he tries to show the value of planting trees, and includes a table that shows the profit and loss values of planting one acre of land. He also provides an illustration of his new machine for measuring trees.
