Agnes Varda is an important and influential French director, writer, and artist whose work uses both documentary style realism and experimental film techniques to explore issues of feminism and social justice. A colleague of Alain Resnais and other Rive Gauche filmmakers, her early work, including this film, prefigures stylistically the French New Wave, and is today considered very much a part of it.
Varda was nominated for the Palme d'Or for "Cleo from 5 to 7," her second feature film, about a female pop singer whose spends two adventurous and winsome hours on her own and talking to friends while awaiting the results of a biopsy.
