Paradisi in Sole Paradisus Terrestis; or, Garden of All Sorts of Pleasant Flowers…
- London:: Humfrey Lownes and Robert Young,, 1629.
Folio page (12 1/2" x 8"), hand colored illustration, text on reverse side of page, archivally matted with print attached along margins with archival tape. A little less offset from the text side, paper is browned, aged, and a little soiled, some chips, small tears, and folds in the left margin, perhaps a little trimming; otherwise in pretty good condition. John Parkinson (1567-1650) was an apothecary and herbalist, and was so well respected in his field that he was consulted on the first Pharmacopoeia Londinensis by the College of Physicians. He had a keen interest in gardening, which led to the publication of his first work, Paradisi in Sole Paradisus Terrestris; or. A Garden of All Sorts of Pleasant Flowers, in 1629. This plate (page 403), which features illustrations of several flowers, is from that work. ODB.
