Original cloth, with blind stamped ruling and gilt title on front board, blind stamped ruling and title on back board. Corners slightly bumped and spine caps worn, front hinge cracked, short tear to the foredge of pages 1 and 2. Inscribed by Robert Winthorp to “Rev. J.D. Miller, with the regards of, Robt Winthrop” on the front endpaper and with Miller's dated inscription noting receipt of the book on 3 June 1886. Engraved frontis. 122 pp. 1 vols. 8vo. Robert Charles Winthrop (1809-1894) was representative and senator from Massachusetts, and a decendant of John Winthrop (1588-1649). Renowned for his oratory skills, Winthrop gave speeches at the centennial of the Boston Tea Party (1873) and the battle of Yorktown (1881) at the invitation of both houses of Congress (ANB). Winthrop also served as president of the Massachusetts Historical Society (1855-1884).
