(There are actually eleven named individuals discussed, since one of the Medals was awarded jointly to three men.) The book's Foreword incorporates a complete list of all ninety of the WWI Medal winners, among them William J. Donovan ("Wild Bill," of later OSS/CIA fame) and Alvin C. York -- neither of whom are among the nine whose stories are told here in detail. The jacket design is by Rockwell Kent. .
