Part I, 8 October 2001 (lots 1-120): Important English Literature, Science and Philosophy. Part II, 9 October 2001 (lots 121-446): English Literature and Fine Incunabula. The library of Abel Berland, long-time active member of the Caxton, Roxburghe, and Grolier Clubs, dispersed here after forty years of active collecting. In light of his relationship with John Fleming and Mike Papantonio (Seven Gables Bookshop), the catalogue tries to note the source of the books, and to record the role of booksellers in the formation of the collection. Highlights of Part I include the Bemis set of the Four Folios of Shakespeare (lots 100-104), William Blake's Songs of Innocence, 1789, one of only 4 copies of this extremely early impression in green ink (lot 6), and To Hope, the last complete autograph poem of John Keats still in private hands, and the only known manuscript source for this very early poem (lot 75). Lavishly illustrated throughout. With this sale "Abel Berland takes his place among the roster of the great book collectors of the century " (preface). Volume two bumped at head of spine.
