Sherman and Smith, 1840. Good. Wilkes, Charles. Map of the Vitigroup or Feejee (Fiji) Islands from the Wilkes' United States South Sea Surveying and Exploring Expedition of 1838, 1839, 1840, 1841, 1842. NY: Sherman and Smith, 1840. Book condition: Good. Professionally restored and backed with tissue. Map sections on tissue are curled from being rolled up. The 1838-42 United States South Sea Surveying and Exploring Expedition under the command of Charles Wilkes was the first U. S. Sponsored circumnavigation of the world. A main goal of the trip, was to chart the waters of the Antarctic, the Pacific and the northwest coast of North America for merchant ships and whalers. His reports were printed for Congress in 1844 and in 1845, published in five illustrated volumes with a map volume containing five folding maps. This 1840 map is one of the five from that map volume, which is very rare.
