First American edition, bound from British sheets. Title page is a cancel with the Doran imprint; spine cloth bears the original Hodder & Stoughton slug. Classic work on the sociology of rural villages and the changes wrought by advancing technology. Sturt (1863-1927) was a wheelwright by trade, and wrote from a rather unusual perspective - a sensitive, self-educated tradesman, documenting and eulogizing the passing of pre-industrial Britain. The first edition is somewhat uncommon.
