Java, Indonesia, 1930. Softcover. Near Fine. Oblong quarto measuring 12" x 8.5". String-tied textured tan paper wrappers A collection of 94 black and white or sepia toned gelatin silver snap shot photographs measuring between 2.25" x 3.25" and 3.5" x 10.5", with some captions in Dutch. Album and photographs are near fine or better. A photo album depicting life in Java in the 1930s. The images depict an upper middle class group of people complete with officers in uniform, possibly Dutch, as they made up a large amount of the population during this decade, and the captions appear to be in Dutch. Java is shown, its building, peoples, and gatherings of the Dutch community are seen here. A beach scene shows some native Indonesians sitting besides the Dutch as well as people traveling through the countryside in relatively early automobiles and eating coconuts. The last few photographs show some sort of women's swimming event at a pool and includes two panoramic photos from the late 1930s. Due to a history of trade between the two countries, the Dutch played a significant part in the development of Indonesia and ruled the country until the Japanese took over during World War II. An interesting assemblage of photos depicting Dutch-ruled Indonesia leading up to World War II.
