Africa Secundum legitimas Projecttionis Sterrographicae regulas et juxta recentissimas relationes et observationes…

  • Nuremberg: , c1737.
By Homann Heirs.

Engraved double page (24 1/2" x 21 "), hand colored, large title colored cartouche in bottom left corner. Scattered browning, soiling, and dampstaining, which affects the image somewhat, but not overly obtrusive, lower portion of vertical fold crudely closed on verso, but repairable, some repairs to corners, wide margins, small publishers letterpress key labels mounted on lower left margin; despite its faults a still very attractive map. This handsome 18th century map of Africa presents Homann's 1715 map of Africa updated by Johann Matthias Hass to include new cartographic developments included by Delisle and D'Anville in their maps. The decorative cartouche shows Europeans negotiating with an African prince, with exotic flora and fauna including lions, a leopard, elephants, a rhino, a crocodile, tropical birds and an unidentified reptile complete the composition. An interesting feature of the cartouche is that the African prince is sitting on the back of another person. The map appears to provide an accurate depiction of Africa in the early part of the 18th century, without many of the fictitious lakes and rivers of earlier maps. Homann focuses on the known coastal regions of the continent, leaving the interior sections largely blank or marked Terra Incognito. On this map Egypt, Nubia and Abyssinia are shown as distinct entities. Norwich # 83.
