Baltimore: The Deutsch Company, 1906. Hardcover. Very Good. Hardcover. SCARCE. Samuel Claggett Chew (1837-1915) was born into a prominent family in Baltimore and received his A.M. from Princeton in 1856, and his M.D. from the University of Maryland Medical School in 1858. [He is apparently the father or kin of Samuel Claggett Chew (1888-1960) who was a well-known scholar of literature at Bryn Mawr University.] Chew was the Chair of Materia Medica and Therapeutics (now known as Pharmacology) at Maryland for 21 years before being transferred by the Dean to the Chair of the Principles and Practice of Medicine in 1886. In addition to teaching as faculty at the Medical School, he served as president of the Board of Trustees of Peabody Institute from 1895 until his death. This volume, published for private distribution by the Deutsch Company, includes a number of Dr. Chew's speeches on a variety of subjects, including Medicine in the Nineteenth Century, The Frick Libarey of the Medical and Chirurgical Faculiity of Maryland, Miracles, ad The Maryland "Act of Religion" and Sir Thomas More. An unusual and interesting find for scholars of Baltimore and Johns Hopkins. Very good in blue cloth covered boards wiht gilt title to front board and to spine. Minor fading to spine and board edges. Wear to spine ends and minor bumping to corners. A few small light spots of soiling to boards. Crack to binding though it remains tight. Text is clean and bright. 137 pages. 8vo. Maryland.
