The texts are from various sources: No. 1 is Austrian traditional, no. 2 is from Des Knaben Wunderhorn, no. 5 is the Marian antiphon Ave regina coelorum.
The three songs belong with Webern's first dodecaphonic compositions. "These songs are probably the most difficult ones that Webern ever composed. In the service of extraordinarily heightened expressiveness, the leaping intervals of the vocal part attain extremes that can be hardly outdone... The premiere die not happen until 1954, in Los Angeles under the baton of Robert Craft." Manfred Angerer, website of Universal-Edition.
