London: Cassell Petter & Galpin, 1878. Hardcover. F (Both boards have separated from book block and are present; book has moderate wear to edges esp. at spine; some spine material is missing at head and heel; text pages have occasional foxing; one plate is missing; a good candidate for rebinding in spite of marbled boards.). Marbled boards with black leather spine; gilt letters on spine; 251 pp. plus 36 pp. supplement; numerous bw line engravings. The first volume of this highly-illustrated British monthly periodical of visual arts, published from 1878-1904. Article topics include the "artists' haunts" of Cornwall, Prague, Raglan Castle and the Wye, Sark, Porlock, Scotland, and Lynton and Lynmouth. Living artists explored are E. M. Ward, Sir Francis Grant, F. Leighton, T. Faed, Sir J. Gilbert, Vicat Cole, W. C. T. Dobson, P. H. Calderon, and G. F. Watts. And much, much more. The last section of 36 pages are the "Art Notes" for the various months of the year, culled together for some reason. This copy is not the prettiest gem in the jewelry box, but the text is still interesting and the illustrations are still lovely to gaze upon.
