FOTÓGRAFAS EN MÉXICO 1872-1960

José Antonio Rodríguez, critic of photography and editor of the magazine "Alquima" presents an historic revision of the pioneer and modern photography in Mexico through the recognition of the life and photographic legacy of several female photographers active since the decade of 1870's. News of the first women photographers in Mexico were reported in 1872, when some arrived in the country accompanying their husbands or travelling alone as tourists attracted by the pre-Columbian culture. At the same time in Mexico the first women photographers were graduating from the Colegio de Artes y Oficios in Mexico City, or in the Escuela de Artes y Oficios, in Puebla. Little is known about them, only a few disperse photographs and some mentions in period sources survive. One of them was María Guadalupe Suárez, of which only one of her photographs survives, despite being the first woman to open a photographic studio in the city of Mexico. The book comprises a collection of close to 130 mostly in black and white photographs (80% inedited) taken by 50 women who either were born in Mexico or decided for personal reasons to live in the country and as the author states "used photography as means of artistic expression." Includes texts and reproductions of the work of Galdina Mendoza, Margarita Henry, Berenice Kolko, Ruth Lechuga, Anita Brenner, Piedad Casasola, Gertude Duby Blom, Tina Modotti, Gisèle Freund, Grete Sager, Helen Levitt, Lola Álvarez Bravo, Frances Toor, Miriam Dilhman, Kati Horna, Josefina Niggli, Laura Gilpin, Mariana Yampolski and Aurora Eugenia Latapí amongst other important names. Published on the occasion of the exhibitions held in 2011 in the Museo de Arte in Mexico City and in 2012-2013 in Casa de América, in Madrid, Spain.
