The author, the wife of artist Douglas Grant (the jacket designer for this book), has written "a fast-paced, moving novel of modern youth," which follows a young Manhattan woman who wins a radio contest and receives a scholarship to a "progressive" college in upstate New York. She "breaks away from home and family to live her own life," which brings her relationship with her mother to a "tragic impasse." Disillusioned in love while away at college, she returns to New York City "friendless and alone [and] at grips with the realities of existence in New York's slums." .
