New York: The American News Company. Very Good-. (c.1905). First Edition. Hardcover. (pictorial cloth; no dust jacket) [front hinge starting, minor bumping and light wear at extremities, tiny shallow dent at bottom edge of front cover, "Fairview Farm / M.M. Norton / Garrettsville, Ohio" stamped on ffep]. (frontispiece + 7 b/w plates) Novel about an almost-35-year-old woman who travels to Russia in the 1890s as part of a group of eight tourists (all women), and re-connects with a man who had been her teacher years ago, and on whom she'd had a bit of a crush (and vice versa). This being Czarist Russia, it's inevitable that she gets mixed up with nihilists -- nihilists! (Lower-case "n," note, as the actual Nihilist movement in Russia had been crushed by the authorities by the early 1880s, after which the term began to be used a bit more loosely to refer to political radicals in general. At any rate, in the context of this novel they are generally not nice people.) .
