A photo album compiled by a citizen of Marion, Ohio between 1897 and 1898. It contains family photographs as well as images from large public events in the city. The album opens with a photo of the "Cake Walk at the Marion Diamond Jubilee" in 1897 with a photo of town hall surrounded by a large crowd and a banner with reads "47th Annual County Fair." One photo from the fair shows an African-American band marching down the street as well as a moose being walked through the town by a soldier. The album continues with images of trolley cars, a procession through town, and a woman singing to the crowd. The next section of images shows men from Company G, 4th Ohio O.U.I. "starting for Columbus to be mustered in." during the Spanish American War. The 4th Ohio would leave for Puerto Rico via the U.S.S. St Paul in July of 1898 where they received orders to advance toward Guayama from Arroyo where they forced a Spanish surrender and flew the colors of the 4th Ohio over the municipal building of the town by August 4th. The album also documents when the men returned to Ohio at the end of 1898 with banners flying which read "Our Brave Boys." The men are seen marching through town with flags and guns being saluted by Marion townspeople. Interspersed throughout the album are family photos of a well-to-do Marion family which features them posing by their house and in their gardens, children riding a bicycle, and a photo of a circus cart with large cats. The album ends with a sweet photo of three fashionably dressed women smiling and watching the procession of Company G.
A wonderful collection of turn of the century photography from Ohio featuring images from the Spanish American War.
