Austria-Hungary, 1880. Hardcover. Very Good. Oblong folio measuring 15" x 12.5". Heavy gray paper. Contains 32 large-format albumen prints measuring 8.5" x 11". Very good album lacking the boards with staining and short tears with near fine photographs.

A curious and lovely large-format photograph album, circa 1880s of Austro-Hungarian origin, showing the complete operations of a canned fish factory of the period, including preservation, canning, and all of the operations of the relevant machinery. The photos show the men and women of the factory cleaning piles of fish, using a variety of machines, and preparing the final product. There are also numerous photographs of the machines themselves and the various rooms and corridors of the factory. Towards the end of the album one of the photos shows men cutting wood for the furnace and another of the cans being prepared. The 1880s saw the first "automatic-line" factory used in the United States and this album depicts the last years of this method of factory work being used.

An interesting and unique album of turn of the century European factory workers.
