A "Romantic" opera in three acts, with a libretto by Kind (after Apel and Laun's Gespensterbuch), Der Freischütz was premiered at the Schauspielhaus in Berlin on June 18, 1821. It "has held the stage uninterruptedly. This may be attributed largely to Weber’s extraordinary ability to judge the effectiveness of his music in the theatre and to his gift for combining musical substance with accessibility. Almost every number of the opera still speaks to its audiences with refreshing vigour and directness." Clive Brown in Grove Music Online.
